Military ophthalmologists are invited to attend the 6th Annual International Military Refractive Surgery Symposium.

Valuable information regarding surgical techniques, complications, patient safety, surgical eligibility, medical policy, coding, and budgets will be shared among the three services in attendance. In addition to United States Military refractive surgeons, there will also be international military refractive surgeons representing France, Japan, and Singapore.

Join us for the Joint Military Technology Summit during the 2011 meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Orlando, Florida.  Dr. Robert Bishop and Dr. Perry Rosenthal will be our invited speakers discussing ocular pain and evolving treatment paradigms.  Among other topics, they will discuss the use of the PROSE (previously konw as the Boston Scleral Lens) in severe ocular surface compromise such as burn patients. 

The Joint Military Technology Summit will be followed by the Annual General Meeting of the Society of Military Ophthalmologists at the Shades of Green Gallery Restaurant, Pod Room.  Sign in and dues collection will be from 1830-1930.  There will be a reception buffet and cash bar.

PURPOSE & OBJECTIVES:

Valuable information regarding surgical techniques, complications, patient safety, surgical eligibility, medical policy, coding, and budgets will be shared among the three services in attendance. In addition to United States Military refractive surgeons, there will also be representatives from, Canada, France, Great Britain, Israel, Japan, Turkey, Germany and Singapore.

 

The purpose of the International Military Refractive Surgery Symposium is to share expert information about the latest advances in military refractive surgery with the goal of improved patient care at all military refractive surgery centers. At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:


    • Recall the differing policies for refractive surgery among the three U.S. services so that appropriate surgery may be provided to service members based on their branch of service and job description
    • Critically evaluate emerging technologies for refractive surgery so that service members may receive the most appropriate and highest quality refractive surgery procedures
    • Identify patients who are not good candidates for refractive surgery to reduce the number of refractive surgery complications
    • Recognize refractive surgery complications and have a firm plan of how to manage these complications

In this FREE session, representatives from the Association of Veterans Affairs Ophthalmologists, the Society of Military Ophthalmologists and others will discuss quality and safety issues in the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. James Bagian, MD, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for Patient Safety and a former astronaut, will provide the keynote address. Discussions will focus on a variety of topics including eye injury mitigation efforts, eye injury treatment in the field and efforts to improve patient safety.
